Root canal therapy has gained a bad reputation over the years due to misinformation spreading rapidly online, through movies, and through other forms of media. This treatment is feared by many patients since they think it’s going to be extremely painful, but root canals aren’t as bad as you think. In fact, if your dentist says you need one, they’re trying to save you from more oral health issues down the line. Read on to learn three reasons why you won’t regret getting a root canal.

#1: Root Canals Are Virtually Painless

Many people are scared to undergo root canal therapy because they think it’s going to hurt a lot. Fortunately, this isn’t the case. Before you undergo a root canal, your dentist or oral surgeon will numb the area. This will prevent you from experiencing any pain or discomfort. Additionally, many dentists offer dental sedation for patients who are particularly fearful or have trouble remaining comfortable throughout the procedure. This helps patients relax so that they can receive stress-free treatment.

#2: Root Canals Give Your Tooth a Second Chance

One of the main causes of cavities is improper oral hygiene. Consuming too many sweet, starchy, or acidic foods and drinks also raises your risk of dental decay since acid attacks your enamel and the sugar in sweets and carb-heavy foods feeds the bacteria that cause cavities. If a cavity gets bad enough, it can lead to a tooth infection.

When a tooth becomes severely infected, a root canal is the only way to save it. This procedure involves removing the infected tooth pulp, cleaning and sanitizing the tooth, and then filling it and placing a filling or crown on it. Not only is this the only way to treat an infected tooth, but it’s also cheaper and faster than having it pulled and replaced. It will also get rinse of any pain you’re feeling in the tooth since the nerves will be removed when the infected pulp is cleaned out.

#3: The Alternative to Root Canal Therapy is Worse

So, what happens if you decide not to get a root canal? Leaving the infection untreated will allow it to continue to spread. Eventually, this may cause the tooth to die. At this stage, there’s no way for your dentist to save it, and you’ll need to have the tooth pulled. Additionally, the infection may spread to other parts of your body. If it enters the bloodstream, it may even cause a potentially fatal condition called sepsis.

If your dentist tells you that you need to undergo root canal therapy, make sure to do it as soon as possible. This will save your tooth from further harm so you can avoid additional issues and get your pearly whites back on the right track!
