What Are Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures are a permanent form of tooth replacement that relies on titanium implant posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone for greater stability. Far different from traditional dentures that rely on your natural suction and dental adhesive to remain in place, implant dentures are designed to support a full denture and allow for greater functionality when eating, speaking, and smiling.

Currently, more than 3 million Americans are living with dental implants in Daytona Beach, and that number is increasing by 500,000 each year. With a 95% success rate when placed by a skilled professional, it is easy to see why they are considered the “gold standard” for tooth replacement.

To receive dental implants, however, you must schedule a consultation with Dr. Lloyd. It is during this visit that he will go over the two different types of dentures you can choose from:

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Requiring between 4 and 8 dental implants, this hybrid prosthetic cannot be removed by anyone other than your implant dentist in Daytona Beach. It is designed to look and feel just like regular teeth and is easy to maintain.

Removable Implant Dentures

Using between 2-5 dental implants, a removable denture, otherwise known as an overdenture, also includes a bar- or ball-retained device to help hold it into place. You can remove it yourself and easily clean your new teeth before going to bed each night.

The Implant Denture Process

Although the process for dental implants is timely, it is well worth the investment in time and money. Yes, you can receive traditional dentures much quicker, but the results will leave you wishing you had gone with this permanent solution instead.

While each patient’s experience is slightly different, the process remains the same. After meeting with Dr. Lloyd for your initial consultation, he will determine if you need preliminary treatment (i.e., bone grafting, periodontal therapy) before moving forward with dental implant surgery. At this point, you will:

  1. Undergo the surgical portion of treatment, which includes a local specialist administering local anesthesia before making small incisions in your gums. After placing each implant into your jawbone, they will close the gum tissue and place a protective cap over the area.
  2. Spend the next 3-6 months recovering at home and allowing osseointegration to occur, which is the fusing of your implants with your bone tissues.
  3. Return to our dental office to receive your metal abutments, which will help to hold your dentures in place.
  4. Finally receive your customized fixed or removable denture and start enjoying your new smile.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

If you are missing all your teeth along the upper or lower arch of your mouth, there is a good chance you will qualify for implant dentures. Although you may need preliminary treatments to create a more structurally sound and healthier environment for your dental implants in Daytona Beach, you can still expect to receive your permanent prosthetics soon enough.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Lloyd will consider your oral health, overall health, and jawbone density to determine if you need bone grafting or periodontal therapy. It is imperative that you are in good general health to undergo minor oral surgery, and your soft tissues are free of disease.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

When it comes to implant dentures, you cannot ignore the many benefits that come with combining traditional dentures and dental implants, some of which include:

  • Improved aesthetics because of the natural-looking denture.
  • Greater functionality when eating your favorite foods. Not only will you no longer need to worry about accidental slippage, but you’ll have a stronger bite force and greater chewing power.
  • A more cost-effective approach that doesn’t require frequent replacements or adjustments every few years. Nor does it require dental adhesives or cleaning supplies.
  • Boosted confidence.
  • The ability to restore your smile with a permanent solution that stimulates your jawbone and prevents changes to your facial shape over time.
